REACH:
Researching Effective Approaches
to Cleaning in Hospitals

A randomised controlled study of the effectiveness of a cleaning bundle intervention to reduce healthcare associated infections in eleven major Australian hospitals 2014-2017

Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and Wesley Medical Research are lead partners in the REACH study, funded by a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Partnership grant (GNT1076006), which aims to evaluate the impact of a new ‘bundle’ approach to hospital cleaning on the transmission of healthcare associated infections.

In 2016-2017, eleven major hospitals received tailored training and support from the study team to implement and evaluate the cleaning bundle intervention.

The REACH trial builds on the work of QUT PhD Student Michelle Allen, who conducted a pilot project of the cleaning bundle at Logan Hospital in 2014. Findings from the pilot study have been used to refine the design of the cleaning bundle and the implementation strategies for the REACH trial, ensuring the intervention is acceptable to hospital staff, has outcomes that can be reliably measured, and is feasible to implement.
